How to Choose a Wedding Photographer

By  |  1 Comment

I can’t describe how important a wedding photographer is. Every big moment and small detail of your perfect wedding needs to be captured from the right angle, at the right second, with the right technique. If you think any of your friend who has a SLR camera would do the job, think again.

How to choose a wedding photographer for your big day? We offer some tips to help.

1. Where to find wedding photographer information?

In principle, word of mouth is better than advertisement. You can get recommendations from recently married friends, fashion designers, event managers and wedding planners. They would share with you their own experiences working with the photographer.

Check out local and international wedding blogs and magazines for their publications. You may have first-sight love towards certain photo styles.

2. How to shortlist  the wedding photographer choices?

It is normal that you find multiple wedding photographers towards whom you have a good first impression via his/her online presentation. However, you need to shortlist them to 3-4 before you start contacting them for a meeting.

You should have already checked his/her website and portfolio. You like their photo styles shown. They seems equivalently good.

Here are some other factors that may help you differentiate them from each other further:

  • Check about their background: a technical degree would be a good sign, though not really necessary; experiences in diverse photography would be an advantage, because you don’t want a typical wedding photo which is the almost same as everyone else’s. Avoid people who just recently picked up a digital camera and decided to become a wedding photographer.
  • Check out their real weddings in the portfolio: he/she may not be able to show most of real weddings due to privacy agreement with clients, but still there would be photos from real weddings in the portfolio in stead of styled shoots. Those photos give you an idea about how good they are in spontaneous situations. Those are probably what you can truly expect from the wedding photographer.
  • Check about their price: quality comes with price. Get the best person you can afford to shoot only the wedding, instead of hiring a less talented one to cover the whole day. Stay in the budget in a smart way. Do not compromise the photo qualities. They are worth every penny.

3. What to expect when meeting a wedding photographer?

Chat about your wedding, the location, the style, the impression you want to create and capture. Avoid anyone who’s trying to “sell” to you. It’s very important that you connect to him or her.

Discuss the fee. Confirm the inclusive & exclusive details in the package corresponding to the price quoted.

DO NOT show your pinterest board and ask for some specific photos you want. Every talented wedding photographer is an artist with his/her own styles. Asking them to re-create some photos would kill their own creativity. You should have already checked, known and liked his/her styles before initiating the meeting.

4. What to expect in the contract?

You’ve finally chosen the best wedding photographer for your wedding. Now it comes to the contract to be signed. Read the fine print carefully and do not assume anything. Besides the basic details including wedding date, starting location and time, photography service details in the package, price inclusive etc., check further about photo usage right, photo delivery time, what are not included (extra photos, albums etc.). Should you have any doubts, do not hesitate to ask.
